THE SETTING
2020 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
ALEXANDER VALLEY
SONOMA COUNTY

An overnight success, The Setting winery was created in 2014 by Jeff Cova, Noah McMahon, and winemaker Jesse Katz, presenting a collection of luxury wines from Sonoma and Napa Valley.

Jesse Katz, a seasoned winemaker with nearly two decades of experience, has honed his craft at internationally acclaimed wineries such as Chateau Petrus. Throughout his journey, he has garnered invaluable insights while working alongside esteemed winemaking teams at renowned establishments like Screaming Eagle, Robert Foley Winery, and Viña Cobos.

In a remarkable feat, Jesse, at the youthful age of 25, assumed the role of lead winemaker at Lancaster Estate in 2010, solidifying his status as one of the industry’s rising stars. His remarkable talent and dedication have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by his recognition as a 40 Under 40 Tastemaker by Wine Enthusiast and being named the first winemaker on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

The Setting, under Jesse’s visionary leadership, achieved a groundbreaking milestone by crafting the most expensive single bottle of wine ever sold at auction. This historic moment unfolded with the sale of a six-liter bottle of The Setting Glass Slipper Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, fetching a staggering $1,000,000 at Emeril Lagasse’s annual charity wine auction.

Now, the eagerly anticipated 2020 release emerges from the acclaimed Glass Slipper Vineyard and SJ Ranch Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this exceptional wine preserves the essence of its origin, capturing the essence of the terroir and showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship behind its creation. With its bold, polished, and sophisticated profile, this wine is destined to captivate discerning palates and leave an indelible mark on the world of fine wine.

In summary, Jesse Katz’s journey epitomizes dedication, innovation, and excellence in winemaking. His remarkable achievements underscore his unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and redefining the art of wine craftsmanship. With each bottle, he invites enthusiasts to embark on a sensory journey, where passion and precision converge to create unforgettable experiences.

Tasting Notes: “The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is a saturated red with a ruby hue and has a forward, floral perfume of juicy mixed black and red fruit, candied violets, plums, and fresh herbs. Full-bodied and gushing with primary fruit up front, it has fine tannins and a supple, rounded mouthfeel, offering loads of blackberries and flowers before revealing slightly more earthy tones of mossy earth and tea leaf. Drink 2025-2040.” 97 Points | Audrey Frick | JebDunnuck.com

Tasting Notes: “The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley was aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. Deep ruby, it explodes with pure aromas of Morello cherries, blueberry, warm chocolate, cured meat and tobacco with youthful wafts of cardamom and vanilla. Full-bodied, plush and hedonistic, it has a velvety texture, generous yet classy oak spice, just enough freshness and a long, spicy finish. Latent, lush and squeaky clean at this stage, it’s an age-worthy Cabernet, though I’d hedge my bets on the 2020s by drinking them on the earlier side. 741 cases were made.” 96 Points | Erin Brooks | RobertParker.com

Tasting Notes: “The 2019 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet shows a deep, ruby colour. It is a beautifully compact wine that delivers complex and nuanced aromas of Bing cherry and black raspberry with tobacco, currant leaf, and cedarwood laced with dried sage. Focused and linear on the medium to full-bodied palate, showing expressive dark berry character and exotic oak spices with a firm backbone of fine-grained structured tannins. Cool raspberry, cherry, and blackberry fruit are perfectly represented, and the lengthy finish is crisp, lively, and energetic. No doubt, this is one to cellar….”

Our #1 Wine of 2023 at WCC

Tasting Notes: “One of winemaker Sam Kaplan’s finest showings from a lineup of 15 wines across his consulting clients, which include Vida Valiente, Memento Mori, Vangone and Maxem, his own label. This 100% Cabernet is a blend of grapes from Pritchard Hill, Howell Mountain and Calistoga. Aged 22 months in 75% new French oak it delivers heady aromas of cinnamon-dusted black cherry and ripe blueberry, an intriguing herbal note and ground espresso. The structured palate is broad and plush with red boysenberries, savoury black olives, leather and a refreshing herbal note. It glides to a chocolate finish, supported by fine-grained, sappy tannins. Drinking Window 2021 – 2040.”
