KAPCSÁNDY FAMILY WINERY

YOUNTVILLE | NAPA VALLEY

Over the past two decades, Kapcsándy Family Winery has established itself as an iconic winery producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals and blends. The trail of high ratings in the upper 90s-100 Points number in the dozens.

OLD WORLD MEETS NEW WORLD

The Kapcsándy family’s journey from Hungary to the heart of Napa Valley is a testament to their love for wine, blending old-world European traditions with American innovation. Lou Kapcsándy’s emigration to the U.S. in 1956 set the stage for a legacy intertwined with the wine industry, initially through his cellar collections of exceptional European wines and mentorship of Washington State’s burgeoning wine pioneers. His career in chemical engineering laid a foundation not only for his professional achievements but also for his and his family’s future in viticulture.

HOW KAPCSÁNDY FAMILY WINERY BEGAN

Their dream took root in 1998 after a visit to Bordeaux’s esteemed Leoville-Las Cases, inspiring Lou and his wife Bobbie to establish a wine business in Napa Valley. Their son, Louis Jr., would join in their dream upon finding a 20-acre jewel vineyard in Yountville, previously part of the Beringer Estates Private Reserve Cabernet program; they embarked on revitalizing the vineyard with a meticulous focus on quality. This labor of love, spanning two generations, symbolizes the Kapcsándy family’s dedication to creating exceptional wines, marrying the art of winemaking and meticulous farming practices with cutting-edge technology.

Kapcsándy Family Winery seamlessly blends the grace of classic European viticulture and winemaking with state-of-the-art modern technology, a formula that has produced an incredible two dozen 100-point wines. Acquired by the Kapcsándy family in 2000, the property underwent an extensive two-year rejuvenation, revitalizing the soil with essential nutrients.

EUROPEAN TRADITION MEETS NAPA VALLEY TERROIR

Inspired by the rich tradition of French wines, the winery places a strong emphasis on Bordeaux-style vineyard practices and winemaking techniques, resulting in wines with a lower alcohol content. Kapcsándy wines eloquently highlight the distinctive attributes of each thoughtfully chosen vineyard plot, presenting the impressive depth and remarkable definition that epitomizes supreme balance and thoughtful winemaking.

The 2021 Estate Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon received excellent scores, including a 97+ from wine critic Jeb Dunnuck, who claimed this wine “will evolve for 30 years and be drinkable for almost all of it.”

Tasting Notes: “Bottled two months prior to the tasting, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Cuvee checks in as 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot brought up in 70% new oak. It has a beautiful core of darker red and black fruits as well as notes of smoked tobacco, chocolate, and spring flowers and has terrific purity as well as freshness. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and layered, it’s a beautiful, elegant, layered Cabernet Sauvignon that will evolve for 30 years and be drinkable for almost all of it.”
97+ Points | Jeb Dunnuck | JebDunnuck.com

Tasting Notes: “…charges out of the gate with rambunctious notes of boysenberry preserves, warm cassis, and blackberry pie followed by nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, tar, and cardamom with a waft of graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate is bright and energetic, with vibrant black and red berry layers and a seductively soft texture, lifted by a refreshing line and finishing long and wonderfully pure. 350 cases were made.”

Tasting Notes: “Outstanding balance and complexity from the beginning that showcases concentrated black fruits and purple flowers with plenty of spices and subtle yet harmonious toast and cedar aromas. Intense graphite and stony minerality, too. Full- to medium-bodied on the mid-palate with delightful acidity that gives this wonderful crunchiness. Fine-grained juicy tannins. Precisely focused wine that is colorful and sound. Beautiful length, too. Already so drinkable now but will age gracefully, especially for Atlas Peak. Try after 2027.” 97 Points | JamesSuckling.com

Tasting Notes: “The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is a saturated red with a ruby hue and has a forward, floral perfume of juicy mixed black and red fruit, candied violets, plums, and fresh herbs. Full-bodied and gushing with primary fruit up front, it has fine tannins and a supple, rounded mouthfeel, offering loads of blackberries and flowers before revealing slightly more earthy tones of mossy earth and tea leaf. Drink 2025-2040.” 97 Points | Audrey Frick | JebDunnuck.com
