SPHAERICS 2024
OVERLINE CHARDONNAY
CARNEROS

Winemakers spend a lifetime building their instincts. Laura Jones built hers alongside some of Chardonnay's most respected names.

Over five years at Aubert, a harvest at Burgundy's Domaine Armand Rousseau, and later as winemaker at Cliff Lede before joining Skipstone, Laura Jones developed a philosophy rooted in letting exceptional vineyards speak for themselves. She and husband Brian Ball founded Sphaerics in 2022, and the 2024 Overline Chardonnay is a compelling expression of that vision.

Jones approached the 2024 with the same restraint that defines the world's finest Chardonnays. The wine spent eleven months in 50% new French oak before another five months in stainless steel, building texture and complexity while preserving freshness and energy. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it captures every layer of minerality, depth, and character the vineyard has to offer.

Everything came together in 2024. Fruit from the Lede family's Carneros vineyard gave Jones the ideal foundation to bring her philosophy to life, earning enthusiastic praise from critics for its purity, balance, and precision. At $79.99, the Overline feels less like an established luxury Chardonnay and more like the opportunity to discover one of California's most promising new producers before the rest of the market catches on.

Tasting Notes: "The 2024 Chardonnay Overline, tasted from tank just prior to bottling, shares remarkable similarities with the 2023, but with everything dialed up. It's another wine that balances inner tension with plush, unctuous textures and unreal density. The depth of the minerality and tactile zip of the acids here join together in effortless harmony. I can't wait to taste this from bottle." 95-97 Points | Billy Norris | Vinous.com

Tasting Notes: "Seductive aromas of sliced lemons, chalk, wet stones, pastry, citrus blossom and beeswax. The palate is taut and precise with a long line of acidity, generous texture and a classical yet refreshing mineral-edged finish with a real old world feel. This is an excellent chardonnay and overdelivers..., made in a true Burgundy style with precision and focus. Drink or hold." 96 Points | Ryan Montgomery | JamesSuckling.com

Tasting Notes: "Using fruit from a vineyard in Carneros owned by the Lede family, this Chardonnay brings together three clones from three distinct blocks: Old Wente, Hyde, and Mount Eden. The site represents a new development for the Lede family, with former Cliff Lede winemaker Laura playing a key role in re-establishing the collaboration. The wine was aged for 11 months in 50% new French oak, followed by 5 months in stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2024 vintage is incredibly pure, bright, and lifted, showing expressive notes of citrus, tropical fruit, and white peach. Layers of saline and wet-stone minerality add depth and vibrancy, while the long finish is full-flavoured, finely mineral, and driven by captivating energy and tension. Sphaerics was founded in 2022 by Brian Ball and Laura Jones, a husband-and-wife team of wine industry veterans. The wines are made by Laura, who fine-tuned her Chardonnay and Pinot Noir winemaking skills during a 5-year tenure at Aubert and a stint at Domaine Armand Rousseau." 96 Points | Jonathan Cristaldi | Decanter.com
