MIURA VINEYARDS
2017 PINOT NOIR
ROCHIOLI VINEYARD

RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

Master Sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji’s purpose for Miura is to produce Pinot Noir from vineyards representing California’s finest. His Crown Jewell, Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir, resulted from decade-long perseverance, and as Emmanuel says, “pestering Joe and Tom Rochioli.”

Emmanuel says he felt like he won the Lottery when he received the call from the Rochioli family that they had some fruit for him. He goes on to state, “For me the Rochioli Vineyard has always been ‘THE’ vineyard in Sonoma County and one of the few vineyards in California that I would term ‘Grand Cru’.

One of California’s ‘Grand Cru’ equivalent sites, Rochioli Vineyard is one of North America’s most distinguished vineyards. Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir was a major contributor that helped put the Russian River Valley on the international map for world-class Pinot Noir, with the help of such iconic winemakers as Gary Farrell, Burt Williams and Ed Selyem (Williams Selyem Winery) in the early 1980s.

To help him craft wines to his high standards, Emmanuel hired Byron Kosuge, his roommate at the University of California at Davis. Byron spent 15 years as the winemaker for Saintsbury until he joined Emmanuel at Miura in 1998. Byron is also the consulting winemaker for a number of boutique wineries such as Small Vines, as well as his own heralded label, B. Kosuge Wines.

Byron and Emmanuel’s styles are aligned, crafting balanced Pinot Noirs naturally, allowing the vineyard’s personality to shine through. Their 2017 shows off the vineyard’s best hallmarks with penetrating cherry fruit, crushed flowers, unyielding depth, and brilliant definition.

Tasting Notes: “Concentrated and elegant, The Miura Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017 begins with aromas of wild berries, cola bean, and English rose petals, then follows with light spice and subtle green herbs. On the palate, powerful Bing cherries, pomegranate, cranberries, and ripe plum are highlighted with fine herbs, hints of vanilla, and lingering floral notes. The mouthfeel is rich and supple, but with enough bright freshness to give it a long, seamless finish. It’s simply the best Pinot Noir I’ve tasted this year.”

From Wine Enthusiast: “Firm lines of graphite and loamy earth streak through the opulent aromas of black plum and dried violet on the nose of this brooding Pinot Noir. The palate is a whirlwind of exuberance, as leathery tannins wrap around more graphite minerality, dried violet and lavender, stewed plum and a touch of bittersweet cocoa on the finish.” 96 Points

The 2016 Cuttings is a larger-than-life Cabernet Sauvignon that always makes an indomitable entrance with a spectacular display of unbridled richness, voluptuous textures and satin layers. The wine was thoughtfully inspired by steep, hillside vineyards and expert blending, and the 2016 was built around a core of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, elevated with Petite Sirah, Syrah and Zinfandel.
