DuMOL is a dominating force in top-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah production, and the winery has been making hits since the early 2000’s. In recent vintages, they have ventured outside of the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast, their usually vineyard sources, to make a stunning Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Did you know that DuMOL’s über-talented winemaker, Andy Smith has extensive experience making some of the most revered Cabernet Sauvignons in the world? Andy was the winemaker at Larkmead from 1999-2013 as well as the winemaker for Gemstone from 1997 to 2004. He was also the assistant winemaker at Paul Hobbs Consulting, where he worked with many of the top vineyards in Napa Valley.
When we learned about DuMOL’s new Cabernet Sauvignon, I couldn’t wait to try it. For their Cabernet, they exercise the same exacting attention to detail and source fruit from vineyards with a powerful sense of place, just like they do for their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah.
Making an entrance from some of Napa Valley’s most expressive vineyards including Meteor, True Dog Knoll in Oakville, and Ballard on Spring Mountain, the 2016 is incredibly stunning.
The largest component for the 2016 is Meteor Vineyard, and it shows in the hedonistic, earthy undertones and dusty tannins. Meteor produces their own high-scoring Cabs from this vineyard which can top $300/btl.
