NICKEL & NICKEL
2022 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
JOHN C. SULLENGER VINEYARD
OAKVILLE | NAPA VALLEY

The Nickel & Nickel 2022 John C. Sullenger Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a portrait of Oakville at its most eloquent, where power and poise meet in seamless harmony. The 2022 vintage release wears its prestigious origins like a tailored suit, speaking in the polished, confident voice of a place long celebrated for producing Napa Valley’s most harmonious expressions of Cabernet.

Drawn from the John C. Sullenger Vineyard, located behind Nickel & Nickel’s Oakville winery, the wine carries the imprint of a singular terroir.

The roots sink into rich clay-loam soils in the very heart of the AVA, where the perfect confluence of soil, climate, and careful farming yields Cabernet Sauvignon with striking depth, polished tannins, and structural integrity.

The 2022 vintage spent 21 months in French oak, allowing the wine to gather nuance without overshadowing its core purity.

On the palate, it moves with precision, each sip revealing more of its layered complexity before settling into a finish that lingers like a quiet echo. It is a wine built to impress now and reward patience in the cellar.

Tasting Notes: “Sourced from Nickel & Nickel’s estate Sullenger Vineyard in Oakville, which surrounds the winery and tasting barn and extends east toward the Napa River and south to the Opus One property line, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 21 months in 55% new French oak. Crafted by winemaker Joe Harden, the 2022 vintage offers a beautifully lifted and perfumed profile. The wine features a juicy core of focused fruit, complemented by the hallmark tannins of western Oakville, reminiscent of soft suede leather. Blue and black-toned fruits are underscored by graphite minerality, wild herb nuances, and a medley of Indian spices, creating a layered and expressive Cabernet Sauvignon with power and finesse.” 95 Points | Jonathan Cristaldi | Decanter.com

Tasting Notes: “A beautiful, balanced, classic Napa cabernet from the vineyard surrounding the Nickel & Nickel winery. It opens with fragrant spiced cherry, spearmint and cinnamon aromas, then red and black cherries, dark chocolate and accents of tobacco leaf and cedar on the palate. Full-bodied but nicely balanced by acidity and moderate, polished tannins. Drink now or hold.”

Winemakers: Joe Harden and Phil Holbrook (formerly of Nickel & Nickel)

Tasting Notes: “Another fantastic effort from Salty Goats partner winemakers Joe Harden and Phil Holbrook, who have crafted wine together at Nickel & Nickel for nearly a decade. While the duo initially intended to keep Salty Goats focused on lighter wines like Pinot Noir, a serendipitous call from winemaker and historian Graeme MacDonald during the challenging 2020 fire season led them to acquire premium Howell Mountain fruit. And while 2021 was a standout, this 2022 is a great follow-up from a challenging vintage, shaped by an intense heat spell over Labour Day. Still, these Salty Goats crafted one of the boldest, most full-throttle, vibrant wines of the vintage, offering Howell Mountain’s signature density and the intensity of chocolatey tannins, yet with plenty of energy and joie de vivre. Fantastic wild herb aromatics build on the full-bodied palate, layered with rich black cherry and blackberry fruit, exotic brown spices, and deep cedarwood accents. It all culminates in a long, wet slate and loamy earth finish. From the Diogenes Ridge vineyard, planted in 2001, certified organic farming since 2016, rising to 548m. Aged 20 months in 65% new French oak. 150 cases produced.” 95 Points | Jonathan Cristaldi | Decanter.com

Winemaker: Thomas Rivers Brown

Tasting Notes: “This wine unfurls with a captivating nose, where black currants and crushed blueberries weave together, accented by elegant cloves and nutmeg. Subtle, alluring, sweet vanilla emerges, leading to delicate spring florals that linger. On the palate, it reveals itself with generosity—rich, juicy, and enveloping, brimming with ripe, vibrant fruit. The texture is supple and seamless, flowing like satin across the tongue, carrying waves of blue and black fruits that echo the aromas. It builds gracefully into a complex, lingering finish, leaving a refined impression of depth and harmony. A wine that speaks quietly of its elegance, yet resonates long after the glass is set down.”
