WALTER HANSEL
2022 PINOT NOIR
SOUTH SLOPE VINEYARD
RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

“Best of all, the Hansel Pinots remain some of the finest values readers will find in small-production Russian River wine.”
—Antonio Galloni | Vinous.com | May 2024

Walter Hansel’s 2022 South Slope Pinot Noir is a testament to California’s elite Pinot producers, offering exceptional quality at a more approachable price point. Revered by many, this wine captures the essence of the Russian River Valley with brilliant fruit quality, grace, and charisma.

The story of Walter Hansel Winery is rooted in a deep passion for the land. Driven by a lifelong love for agriculture, Walter Hansel planted the first vines on their family estate with the help of his son, Stephen. What began as a father-son project in the 1980s evolved into a pursuit of winemaking excellence.

The Estate spans 80 acres of contiguous vineyards, with the South Slope at the highest elevation and furthest southern point. This plot, planted to the prized Clone 777, produces wines known for their complex earthiness and depth.

The 2022 South Slope Pinot Noir underwent fermentation in stainless steel before aging 12 months in oak, allowing it to develop a rich, layered profile. Earning 94 points from Auddrey Frick at JebDunnuck.com, this wine is a shining example of the meticulous craftsmanship behind each bottle.

Tasting Notes: “The 2022 Pinot Noir The South Slope Vineyard is made entirely from the Dijon clone 777 and pours a deep magenta hue. In the glass, it gives off a more floral perfume, with notes of violets, black raspberry coulis, sweet cedar, and mossy forest floor, and brighter fresh red fruit comes through on the palate. Medium-bodied, it reveals more focus on the palate, with a mouthwatering feel, and it has fine tannins and a light, salty finish. A very lovely wine, it’s going to reach its tenth birthday with ease if stored properly. 405 cases were produced.”

CUVÉE ALYCE
RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

$49.00

Tasting Notes: “Dark and enveloping, the 2021 Pinot Noir Cuvee Alyce is the richest offering in this lineup. Pouring a deep red/purple, it’s saturated with aromas of boysenberry liqueur, lavender, cedar, and licorice. Ample and full-bodied, it remains light on its feet, with mouthwatering lift, well-integrated, ripe tannins, and smoky incense on the back palate. Give it another year or two to shed its considerable baby fat and drink 2025-2035.”

Tasting Notes: “Boasting a rich magenta/ruby hue, the 2022 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is classic and very much in the style lovers of this estate have come to expect. It’s ripe with notes of fresh black cherries, scorched earth, violets, and dark forest earth. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with sweet tannins and is generous without feeling heavy. Long on the finish and fully dry. It’s a very well-styled Pinot Noir from this challenging vintage that’s going to drink well over the next 6-8 years.”
