TURLEY WINE CELLARS
2018 ZINFANDEL
OLD VINES | CALIFORNIA
Turley Wine Cellars is an American icon that’s been a benchmark producer of Old Vine Zinfandel for nearly three decades. Right out of the gate, their first vintage of 1993 Hayne Zinfandel ranked #11 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 list, and they’ve remained a paragon in their field ever since.
They now produce a staggering forty-seven separate wines from over fifty Certified Organic Vineyards, and they specialize in ancient vines.
Old Vine Zinfandel is composed of a variety of old sites from California that are either too small to be made into a vineyard designate wine or are “new” to the Turley family.
Although there is no official rules as to what constitutes “Old Vine” wines, the vines used for this Old Vine Zinfandel are anywhere from 50 to 130 years old. I think that qualifies.
The wine is a true representation of California old vine Zinfandel, hailing from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador and Paso Robles. There is no better way to gauge the classic character of old vine Zinfandel in California than through this wine.
All natural yeasts used in all fermentations, and aged for 12 months in 80% used oak barriques, of which 80% is French and the rest American.

Winery Notes: “(Winemaker) Tegan has called this vintage one of the best he’s seen in a long time. Silky, structured, savory, and seriously satisfying, this wine has kind of natural depth, complexity, and grace that can only come from truly old vines. The full gamut of fruits and a satin-like texture, the Old Vines over-delivers, and will continue to do so for many years to come. Ready to enjoy immediately at cellar temperature, around 55-65oF.”

STARR ROAD RANCH
RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY
Retails at: $52.00 per bottle
Members’ price: $45
From Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2018 Zinfandel Old Vine Starr Road Ranch has restrained aromas of cranberry sauce, apricots and sweet berry fruits with accents of aniseed and bitter citrus peel. Medium to full-bodied, it floods the mouth with dense fruits set in a chewy frame and finishing slightly warm.”91 Points
LIMERICK LANE
2019 ZINFANDEL
RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY
Members’ price: $39.99
Winery Notes: “Our Russian River Zinfandel is our flagship wine. Originally planted by Italians at the start of the 1900’s, this wine hearkens back, in some ways, to a different time. While seamless and with an unparalleled clarity of flavor and aromas, there is also an undeniable gravity that Limerick Lane Zinfandel seems to exude. It may be nothing more than a romantic appreciation for the hands that have tended these vines for over a century. It’s possible that it is a result of the other varieties, now all but extinct, save for a few old Zinfandel vineyards like Peloursin, Negrette, and Petite Sirah, that add more structure, color, and acid than normally found in Zinfandel. Maybe the rocks, the dirt, the morning fog and the afternoon sun come together in this place a little differently than anywhere else. It may even be all of these special characteristics combined, but the Zinfandel grown at the end of this little lane is undeniably special, undeniably unique, and undeniably “Limerick Lane.”
