TAMBER BEY
2016 RABICANO
DEAUX CHEVAUX VINEYARD
YOUNTVILLE | NAPA VALLEY
We begin by focusing on a vineyard’s location when evaluating and then describing a wine during our weekly tastings, because the origin of the fruit provides an initial clue as to the quality of the grapes and can often be the single most important element that imparts a chance at greatness.
Tamber Bey’s Deux Chevaux Vineyard in Yountville is in a prime location that’s across the river from Kapcsandy where there’s no shortage of 100 Point wines being produced on a regular basis.
It’s also near the revered Ghost Block Vineyard where greatness seems to flow from the earth.
The fruit for the Rabicano Cabernet-based Blend was crafted by winemaker Andy Jones, who began working alongside winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown in 2008, and Brown is still Tamber Bey’s consulting winemaker.
If you have tasted any of the earlier vintages of Rabicano you are well aware of how great this wine is for the price. If you were to taste this wine blind you would think that you were tasting a $100 Yountville Cabernet Blend…
A stunning display of power and restraint, the 2016 Rabicano is classically Yountville with a palpable sense of place. The wine was built around a solid core of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and incorporates all five of the top Bordeaux varietals.
Kept for nearly 20 months in French oak barrels, the 2016 possesses a velvety richness laden in sweet blackberries, red plum, dark chocolate, cigar box, baking spices and hints of blue fruits.
If you love beautifully detailed, richly satisfying red wine with a true sense of place, balance and persistent flavors, this one is definitely for you.

From JamesSuckling.com, “An impressive blend of 69 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 22 per cent merlot with touches of malbec, petit verdot and cabernet franc, that delivers focused dark-fruit aromas, ahead of a core of ripe blackcurrants that surround a smooth, central core of plush, fine tannins. Balanced and flavorful. Drink or hold.” 93 Points

From Wine Enthusiast, “This red is brightly layered in fresh blue fruit, meat and garrigue, showing plenty of density and complexity. It has a wild character that’s intriguing and energetic, with lasting threads of white and black pepper on the finish.”
