When it comes to the greatest Petite Sirah vineyards in California, the Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga, which was the source for the iconic Carver Sutro Petite Sirah for years, is foremost.
The site produces fruit with laser focus, extraordinary intensity and astonishingly compelling flavors. The Carver Sutro winery was sold a few years ago, but the vineyard has been reincarnated in the 2015 Mending Wall Petite Sirah, which comes from the same block as Carver Sutro. The wines are made by Thomas Rivers Brown, one of Napa Valley’s premier winemakers.
Mending Wall is a partnership between three owners: Frank Dotzler (a co-founder of Outpost Winery), Mark Pulido and Donna Walker (owners of the Cult brand Pulido-Walker Wine) and Thomas Rivers Brown, one of the most talented and sought-after winemakers in the country.
The group sought to build a winery on the valley floor making premium wines from select vineyards. They found 20 acres in the far northeast corner of the St. Helena appellation along the Silverado Trail, and opened in 2015.
With warm days and cool nights, Calistoga offers the perfect climate for Petite Sirah to fully develop, and many of California’s best examples of this variety come from the Calistoga area.
The Palisades Vineyard offers the most vivid interpretation of the varietal, and once you try it, it will undoubtably leave a lasting impression.
