Some of the most interesting and provocative wines over the past 10 years have been Red Wine Blends. Also referred to as “Proprietary Red”, “Red Wine Blend”, or by a proprietary name such as Insignia or The Prisoner.
There are no hard and fast rules that govern what varietals can be used and in what quantities. But these blends offer winemakers a blank canvas on which to create a pastiche of flavors, textures and nuances they envision, often resulting in breathtaking works of art.
If you would like to order any of these wines, we invite you to Mix and match as you wish in a mixed case*. You can either contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to place your order, or order them individually below.
The number one pick on our top 10 wines of the year this past December, the 2013 Sebastiani Gravel Bed Red went on to receive a near perfect 97 Point Score from Robert Parker in March. At under twenty-five per bottle, many of you enjoyed this wine by the case… or cases, before the review surfaced. The moment the review came out, the wine sold out instantly… Truly a not-to-be-missed vintage for this Sonoma blend, Robert Parker’s recent article which focused primarily on Sonoma wines indicates that 2014 may even be slightly superior to 2013 for Sonoma Valley.
With fruit sourced from famed sites, such as the iconic Cherryblock Vineyard, Bedrock and Mountain Terraces, this fantastic fusion of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, enhanced with Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot may very well become one of your new favorites. I highly recommend staying ahead of the curve and securing a case or two, before the reviews on the 2014 surface. Retails at $40.00/btl; Your price $24.99/btl
A wine of great intensity… invariably a local treasure, Marietta Cellars’ flagship Angeli Cuvée delivers in grand fashion. It’s broad and expansive flavors, voluptuous textures are beautifully structured in this big, American fruit bomb. Everything from the wines striking ruby/purple color to the glorious aromatic display and multi-layered tapestry of flavors, unabashedly screams old-school field-blend, and Angeli Cuvée is clearly one of the greatest. Year after year the winery produces top-quality, consistently high-scoring wines that compete with the best-of-the-best in their category and price range. Your price $29.99/btl
From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “The 2013 Papillon Proprietary Red is 100% from Napa and is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This killer wine has an inky purple color and offers notes of espresso roast intermixed with white chocolate, creme de cassis, blackberry and a touch of toasty oak. The wine was aged 16 months in French oak, of which 40% was new. Broad and opulent, with great intensity, purity and depth, this is another stunner from Dave Phinney, a.k.a. Orin Swift.” 95 Points Your price $64.99/btl
Overloading your sensory receptors with a glorious display of fruit, this absolutely delicious proprietary blend is unabashedly California, with extraordinary perfume of blueberry pie, interwoven with violets, crushed blackberries and black raspberries. An exciting new project, destined for wild success, this flawlessly constructed blend is driven by 59% Zinfandel grown on the rugged slopes of Howell Mountain, uplifted with 31% Petite Sirah from 70 year old, dry-farmed vines in Calistoga, and completed with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Retails at $45.00/btl; You price $36.00/btl
Entering your palate with a cascade of beautifully delineated dark berries shadowed by intriguing black cherry, spices and cigar box. The phenomenal Arietta Quartet was composed by Andy Erickson who you may recall made Screaming Eagle from 2005-2010 producing two perfect 100 Point Wines. An irresistible blend encompassing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2014 is overflowing with potential, foreshadowing a striking elegance and stunning concentration. Retails at $68.00/btl; Your price $64.99/btl
Hauntingly beautiful… The 6 barrel production of 2014 Steps Reserve Barrel Select cascades over your palate with surreal intensity, layered in an abundance of blueberries, blackberries, crème de cassis and espresso bean. A wine thats unbridled demand is solely due to its scrumptiously thrilling quality and unforgettable flavors and aromas. With a steep decline in production over the previous two vintages, the 2014 Barrel Select will only be available at the $45/btl price through March. I strongly recommend securing a case or two at the lower price, while it’s still available. Your price $45.00/btl
A completely compelling and delicious red coming from the maker of the popular Gamba Zinfandels, Gus Gamba’s Etrusca Velia poses a stunning display of blueberries, milk chocolate, strawberry jam, and dark cherries. Saturating your palate with a full gamut of red, blue and black fruits… this stunningly proportioned blend merges ancient Zinfandel, Primitivo and Petit Sirah grapes and delivers a wide spectrum of favors that continually unwind on your palate. After Robert Parker’s recent visit to the Gamba’s Estate winery, he alerted readers that, “… Gamba’s name is going to have to be included with some of the stars of Sonoma, such as Hartford Court, Carlisle, Bedrock and even the superstar Turley.”
Since its debut in 2000, Prisoner Wine Company has revolutionized the art of blending, faithfully dispensing the wildly provocative aromas and fabulous fruit intensity that we’ve come to expect from The Prisoner. The winery is an inspirational reference standard for mastering Bordeaux varietals in Napa Valley, and at 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, the new Paraduxx Proprietary Red is making a strong statement of quality and value. Fabulously concentrated with profound depth and a velvety integration of tannins, we loved the 2013 so much, that we’re now featuring this wine on our tasting menu and by-the-glass at our Yountville store. From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “Their flagship wine, the 2013 Proprietary Red Dancing Hares is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The color is a saturated ruby/purple, the nose sightly more restrained than the Mad Hatter, but intense, deep and promising. The wine is extremely full-bodied, with notes of chocolate, espresso, crème de cassis, licorice and blackberry, this has killer intensity, super full-bodied richness, but is relatively light on its feet for this kind of mass and richness. This is a fabulous wine and certainly a great 2013, which is saying something in a vintage that is this incredible. Drink it over the next 15-20 years.” 98+ Points Your price $149.99/btl

From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “The 2013 La Joie, which is 46% from Knights Valley, 32% from Chalk Hill and 22% from Alexander Valley, is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Showing loads of graphite, cedar wood, charcoal, crème de cassis and forest floor, this may well turn out to be a 50+-year wine. It tastes like a great first-growth Pauillac and has an amazing amount of complexity and richness.” 100 Points – Your price $390.00/btl
(5 bottles available – Subject to prior sale without notice)
From Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “The 2013 La Muse, like all of the 2013s, comes about one-third from Alexander Valley vineyards, 40-plus percent from Chalk Hill, and the rest Knights Valley and Bennett Valley – all high-elevation hillside vineyards. A blend of 89% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec at 14.3% alcohol, the wine is amazingly like a great vintage of Petrus, with mulberry, black cherry, licorice, truffle and unctuous, thick, juicy fruit all present in this full-bodied masterpiece. The tannins are still present. The wine has purity and savory presence and is remarkable. The finish goes on for well past a minute. This wine would probably benefit from 5-8 years of bottle age and last 40-50 years.” 100 Points Your price $390/btl
