SODARO Estate – A Hidden Gem | Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

This could be our “Winery Discovery of the Year”!

Each year it seems we come across a winery that clearly deserves the title of “Winery Discovery of the Year”.

In 2011 it was MONTAGNA Cabernet Sauvignon from Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley.  Last year it was TEN ACRE Pinot Noirs from the Russian River Valley.

Discovering this winery, tasting their wines and hearing their story was a delight and quite impressive.  Sodaro will be a contender for our 2013 “Winery Discovery of Year” title, I have no doubt.

Yes, it’s still early in the year, but when we tasted the wines, our 12-member tasting panel was unanimous in our admiration of the line up, and our decision to bring them on board, immediately!

Coombsville – Napa Valley

Don and Deedee Sodaro spared no expense in building a premier winery from the ground up.  After extensive research and soil testing, they decided to plant their flag in the cool climate Coombsville AVA of Napa Valley, a region known for growing and producing high quality Bordeaux varietal wines.

To help them achieve their goal of producing world-class wines, they enlisted some of the brightest minds in Napa Valley wine making and vineyard management:  Winemakers Bill and Dawnine Dyer, and Vineyard Manager Michael Wolf.  They also had custom caves built to house their wines.

The Wines

The Sodaro wines are estate grown, hand harvested, made from free-run juice – no pressed wines, aged 24 months in 50% new French oak (except the ESTATE BLEND), and then aged an additional 24 months in bottle.

Sodaro Felicity Cabernet SauvignonSODARO 2008 “FELICITY”

Dark garnet in color with aromas of ripe red and black fruit; bright cherries and blackberries, along with hints cigar box, sandalwood, mocha, and clean earth.   The wine’s complex structure offers an appealing balance, soft tannins, and a long, lingering finish.  This Cabernet delights the senses from start to finish, and then some!

This single vineyard Cabernet blend includes 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec, and 2% Cabernet Franc.  470 cases produced.  ($55)

Sodaro Estate BlendSODARO 2008

Almost opaque in color with deep ruby tinge around the edges.  Brilliant aromas of dark stone fruits, blackberries, raspberries, violets, clove and sweet pipe tobacco, leading to flavors of same with added nuances of dark chocolate, and sweet vanilla oak.  Full-bodied, silky tannins, luxurious mouthfeel, and simply delightful!

Each year this wine is comprised of a blend of the finest lots from the SODARO Estate Vineyards.  The wine is aged in 100% new French oak barrels.  Each year the blend changes, and in 2008 it is comprised of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Petite Verdot, and 2% Merlot.  220 cases produced.  ($75)

We seemed to really hit it off with our new friends at Sodaro, and so they offered us two wines that are usually offered only to their mailing list.  Note: These two wines are extremely limited as you can surmise from the production levels.

Petite Verdot is used in Bordeaux varietal blends to add “spice box”, dense fruit, dark color, and powerful flavors.  On it’s own, it can be quite experience of a full-bodied, structured wine packed with deep, dark, brooding flavors.  Just 75 cases produced.

Deep electric purple in color.  High-toned aromas of violets and raspberry leading to flavors of currants, chocolate covered raspberries, clove, pencil lead, and spices.  A bold and concentrated wine that is refined with silky tannins and long, extensive finish. Fantastic!  ($55)

Sometimes referred to as “The Black Wine of Cohors”, 100% Malbec bottlings are very rare, as the varietal is used primarily as a blending grape adding color and structure.  But when done right, it can be a sensational experience.  Only 35 cases were produced.

Dark inky purple in color with aromas of cocoa, floral notes (violets), and ripe black cherry, leading to dark fruit nuances of plum, cassis, earth, licorice, tobacco, and spice.  Intensely concentrated, firm tannins, grip, structure, and a forceful finish.  This is wine is not for the meek of heart looking for elegance.  ($55)
