There are a few wineries that have helped put Alexander Valley in northern Sonoma County on the world stage of wine growing and production. Wineries such as Robert Young, Jordan Vineyards, Alexander Valley Vineyards, Murphy Goode, Stuhlmuller Vineyards, White Oak, and others certainly played a large part in establishing the region as a premier AVA (American Viticultural Area).
But the conversation would not be complete without including Marietta Cellars.
Beginning in 1978, Chris Bilbro built what was for many years considered a “secret local treasure”. And then, as is inevitable, the rest of the world discovered Marietta Cellars and the impress wines Chris was making. The rest, as they say, is history.
Chris has passed the mantle and most of the work and operation on to his sons who are diligently carrying forward the mantle of their father’s and Marietta’s vision; making delicious, user friendly, crowd pleasing wines that are also great values.
With brothers Scot (the winemaker) and Jake (vineyard manager), the Bilbros are taking their father’s vision into the future, incorporating the latest modern-day wine growing and making techniques, combined with old world, or should I say, “old school” know how and passion that can only come from having grown up immersed in the winery’s culture and watching your family work tirelessly in building a legacy.
The result is nothing short of inspirational. No wonder that the flagship Marietta wine, Angeli Cuvée has garnered some of my most loyal customers, some of which have been with me for over two decades. You know who you are! 🙂
As you may have read, 2013 was an amazing vintage in the Alexander Valley, as it was in California’s entire North Coast wine region (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Issue #223, Mar 2016). The run on this new 2013 Angeli Cuvee has already exceeded expectations. If you love interesting, satisfying, and flat-out delicious red wine blends that are still reasonably priced, I highly recommend that you find some this new release from a locally treasured, iconic winery. (Suggested retail: $30)
2013 ANGELI CUVEE
“The 2013 vintage Angeli Cuvee is rich, voluptuous and sexy. Bright and evocative in the glass, the fruit runs from tart rhubarb all the way to ripe blackberry. A full mouth of fruit yields to stone and earth as the Zinfandel is bolstered by textural Petite Sirah. Brilliant now, this wine will surprise Zinfandel Lovers with its aging ability.”
